Reality Remade – John Goldsmith
Whilst we’re tallying up the votes for the Reality Remade competition, we thought we’d share a few images and thoughts from competition judge, John Goldsmith on the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray phone.
Here’s what he had to say:
“The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is a handy little camera. Yes, a camera. It has various focusing modes, metering and exposure compensation. Did I mention the best feature? The Ray boasts an impressively wide, wide-angle lens. I’ve only shot with the camera for four days but already I can see going small has certain advantages. For example, taking photos in a moving subway car was carefree particularly because the phone can be set to silent. While on the street, strangers don’t recognize I am taking photos, even when I’m within 3 feet of them. Additionally, my most used dSLR, while nice, is much heavier and because of the diameter of its wide-angle lens, making photos off reflective surfaces is just not as straightforward. For a competition about “Reality Remade,” I can envision this being a useful tool. Also, when I’m pushing my twin girls around in the stroller – an every day reality – I am able to wield this family vehicle with one hand and the Ray in the other. While that’s not uncommon with my primary camera, again, the robust size of an SLR can be an issue. Several of my photos in the above gallery were taken this way and you can even get a glimpse of us (me, the camera, and my lovely girls!). I’m embarrassed to say that the Ray is my first smartphone and I’m excited to have been able to take advantage of its many features including its portability and the camera’s wonderful image quality considering that a fits neatly into my pocket; an obvious benefit for both street photographers on the go and, yes, even us parents with kids in tow.”
Last month Peter Dench hit the streets for us, and over the next couple of days we’ll be showcasing a few more images from fellow judges before announcing our finalists next week.
Stay tuned!
