Discussion Image of the Week: by Marja Skotheim Folde

by marja skotheim folde

Jared: Sticking with the ladies this week, this image from Marja has been stuck in my head for weeks now. This greyness about the colors adding a melancholy mood, that nice diagonal evenly splitting the frame — and trapped along that diagonal — the seagulls, just-so apart from each other, showing almost a stop-motion of a birds flight, introducing elapsed time into the still photo, but not with motion blur or panning or any of the usual tricks. The elapsed time makes me feel like this alabaster-white woman has been staring out to sea for ages, in this cold, blue/gray world. Almost instantly I was reminded of a more famous image by Trent Parke, though the human and formal elements of Marja’s make this a more interesting frame for me.

What are you, some kind of ornithologist or something? A bird at the beach is a seagull I say.
