Street photographer and photojournalist Hughes Leglise-Bataille, or Hugo as he was known to many flickr members, was tragically killed this past Sunday in a car accident in Brazil. His his wife and sister were also amongst the 7 deaths.

Hugo’s agency, Agency Wostok Press, confirmed the tragedy to us early this afternoon.

Both a huge contributor and character around HCSP in the past, Hugo will no doubt be remembered by many for the many discussions he contributed in the group to and his striking images. Messages of condolence are being left by many photographers over on this thread in the group.

More details on the tragedy can be found in this post by Andres Gunthert (english translation) and is this article by a local newspaper (english translation)

Our condolences and thoughts are with the families of those involved.

Great opportunity to have a look through a great photographers archive, pair up some photos, win a book — and bragging rights for your editing skills.

David Hurn / Magnum Photos -- 1955 London

From Joni Karanka of the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff, Wales:

“Passing Time” by David Hurn will open at Third Floor Gallery on the 18th of November, and we’re looking for your collaboration in curating this exhibition. David thought about a little artificial ploy to show the passage of time in his work. That is, to divide the 55 years of his photographic life to date in two parts: before and after 1982. By this means, pairs of photographs are presented together which have both the familiar and dissimilar elements of having been taken years apart.

David has already prepared most of the pairs, but we have allowed room for three more pairs to be curated by members of the public. Thus we are asking you to browse the Magnum archives and find pairs of images from David Hurn’s work. These can match in content or form, place or texture, the only rule being that one has to be taken before 1982 and the other after 1982.

The best pair will win a signed copy of David’s latest book: Writing the Picture

David Hurn’s portfolio on the Magnum website

How to propose the pairs? On the Magum’s website there is a Search field. One way is to type there keywords and hurn, for example hurn portrait, or hurn hair, hurn animal, hurn dog… Whatever you can think of. Then you can paste them here in this thread using img src HTML tags or simple http links.

Hope you like the idea and we are looking forward for your pairs.

Your submissions should be placed in this thread on HCSP. Good luck!

(Update: David is liking the process so much that they have now said 5 pairs of images will be included in the exhibit — and all 5 editors will win a copy of his new book, Writing the Picture.)

And if you don’t know about the Third Floor Gallery, keep your eye on them, some great exhibitions thus far — currently they’re showing a selection from Street Photography Now.

A few weeks ago, the current moderators of the Hardcore Street Photography (HCSP) group on Flickr began discussing creating a presence outside of Flickr. I suggested using Street Reverb and they agreed.

Our intention is to promote discourse around the practice of street photography and showcase interesting new work from around the globe, while retaining the energy and vibrance of HCSP

In a recent interview about street photography Sophie Howarth brought up several salient points about the current movement in street photography. The web has played an influential role in the recent resurgence because its allowed an eclectic mix of photographers from around the globe to come together, share knowledge and collaborate. Those of us who have participated in HCSP over the years have experienced this type of collective energy and want to help it spread.

We believe that HCSP has carved out a unique position in the street photography community. Now it’s time to evolve and move beyond the confines of Flickr. What started out as a small Flickr group now reverberates throughout the street photography community. We hope you join us for the ride.

Submissions are now open for Issue #1 of Street Reverb Magazine: Surveillance.

Street photographers are watching and being watched more than ever. The public has become hyper aware of cameras and the implications of being photographed in pubic. Conversely, more street photographers than ever have found an outlet for their work on the internet. There have been whispers that street photography is in the midst of a renaissance, but photographing in public in the age of surveillance comes with a set of challenges previous generations never had to face.

In this initial issue we’ll be examining this duality, however you interpret it.

Submissions can be made through our Flickr group or via email – submissions@streetreverbmagazine.com

Guidelines: You can submit up to 5 images. They should be 72dpi and 800 pixels on the longest side. If one of your photographs is selected for the issue you’ll be contacted about supplying a high rez version.
